Alaka`i Nalu

Literally translated as “leaders of the waves,” Hualalai Resort’s Alaka’i Nalu program reflects an earlier era of the Hawaiian beach boy. Our Alaka’i Nalu are respected masters of the ocean who are committed to Hawaiian ocean activities, safety and history. They are some of the top watermen and women in the state.

This special place called Ka‘upulehu, once believed to be named Ka`ulupulehu, roasted breadfruit, is based on a legend of two sisters, Kolomu'o and Pahinahina, who was visited by Pele while roasting their breadfruit. Stories such as these help define the history of these lands.

Ka`upulehu Cultural Center

At the Ka‘upulehu Cultural Center, located below the Hualalai Grille, the legacy of this place and the culture of Hawai‘i is celebrated with programs designed to educate families:
